THE FIRST BANK STORY
First Bank Brings Community Banking to Mayodan, NC, Making Their Community Complete.

First Bank of Mayodan opened on November 10, 2003, bringing community banking to Rockingham County and the surrounding area. Contact LeGrand Bennett, Vice President and Branch Manager, Amanda Joyce, Branch Officer, and tellers Cathy Bokoski and Darlene James for help with all of your banking needs!

Every community has basic needs - a supermarket, a drug store, a gas station, a bank. For the Mayodan, NC, community, they had all of their needs fulfilled until their only bank decided to leave town. For years, the community was incomplete. Residents couldn't make simple banking transactions without heading out of town.
"We haven't had a bank for a few years," said Billy Ray Smith, mayor of Mayodan. "Our previous bank moved to Madison because our citizens were mainly using the branch for cashing checks and making deposits to their savings accounts."
Mayodan town leaders decided to do something about their lack of a local bank. Dennis Sparks, a Mayodan developer, had recently purchased a prime piece of Mayodan property and discussed the community's needs with town leaders. "When we purchased the property, the property had been involved with the local mill for over 100 years. We felt like this was a prime piece of property available for developing. We went to the town and asked them what they needed most. They overwhelmingly replied - a bank."
"After talking with the state banking commissioner and getting a list of 10-12 banks who would be interested," Sparks continued. "We narrowed it down to two. We entered into talks with both and after talking with Mr. Garner {president and CEO of First Bank}, we felt like First Bank was a perfect fit, both with their philosophy and what the people in Rockingham County needed."
Donnie Joyce, Executive Director of the Western Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, discussed Mayodan's need for a local bank with his brother and sister in-law who live in Troy, NC. First Bank, a state-charted community bank based in Troy, seemed like a natural fit. "First Bank is the perfect community bank for the Mayodan community," Joyce said.
Jerry R. Carlton, former mayor of Denton, NC and retired Mayodan city manager of 25 years, was also familiar with the success and appeal of First Bank. First Bank, then Bank of Montgomery, had moved to Denton years ago, giving Carlton a firsthand look at their banking philosophy. More recently, Mr. Carlton was invited to tour First Bank's facilities in Troy. He was impressed by the brick and mortar setup, but more importantly, he was impressed with First Bank's President and CEO Jimmie Garner. "Mr. Garner and I developed a tremendous relationship, with our mutual interest in music, and in making Mayodan a truly successful community. I really feel like having First Bank in our community will be mutually beneficial for the bank and for the Mayodan community as a whole."
With the new knowledge of First Bank's success in so many small markets across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, Joyce and his town colleagues called First Bank representatives in for a meeting. Jimmie Garner, president and CEO of First Bank, Anna Hollers, executive vice president, and Jesse S. Capel, chairman of First Bancorp, met with the town council and other town representatives to share First Bank's philosophy of One-On-One Banking and the impact the bank could have on the Mayodan community.
Community leaders immediately saw a connection. First Bank prides itself on providing banking convenience and meeting the financial needs of its communities. The decision to have a First Bank branch in Mayodan was an easy one for all parties involved.
"We were very impressed with the fact that First Bank staffs their branches with local people," Mayor Smith commented. "When you know the people you are doing transactions with, and they know you, you feel right at home."
There is still a tremendous buzz around town about the opening of First Bank's first branch in the community. Town executives did all they could to make the transition of property, power, water and all of the basics as easy as possible. The citizens were truly ready for the bank to open, and it did on December 12, 2003.
"We really feel like First Bank was hand-picked by the citizens of Mayodan," Mayor Smith said. "The people of First Bank are pleasant, community-minded and so friendly. And with their selection of local board members in every community they serve, we know that decisions about our citizens' banking needs will be made right here in our community."
Mayodan Town Manager Debbie Cardwell is anxious to have a hometown bank in her hometown. "We are very excited about First Bank coming to Mayodan," she said. "They are a good fit for our town."
Dennis Sparks agrees. "All that we've heard from the community has been positive and encouraging. After meeting with First Bank, we really felt like it was divine intervention! "
"We're really humbled by the trust they are putting in us with the economic downturn due to the textile, tobacco and furniture industries," Sparks added. "We are really excited that they would take a chance on us and we're willing to work towards the success of our community and the success of the bank."
